Public Health England (PHE) – 8 August 2017

Dr Deborah Turbitt, Public Health England (PHE) London deputy director for health protection, said:

«PHE has been notified of a confirmed outbreak of norovirus among people associated with the World Athletics Championships.

«We have so far been made aware of approximately 30 people reporting illness and two of these cases have been confirmed as norovirus by laboratory testing.

«PHE has been working closely with the London 2017 organisers and the hotel to provide infection control advice to limit the spread of illness.»

Background

Norovirus is often caught through close contact with someone carrying the virus or by touching contaminated surfaces or objects.

Norovirus can be very unpleasant but is rarely serious. Most people make a full recovery within one or two days, without treatment. It is important that people with diarrhoea and vomiting drink plenty of fluids to avoid dehydration.

LOC – 7 August 2017

There have been a number of cases of gastroenteritis reported by team members residing within one of the official team hotels for the World Championships.

Those affected have been supported by both team and LOC medical staff, in addition we have been working with Public Health England to ensure the situation is managed and contained.

As a result, further advice and guidelines have been issued to team doctors and support staff – standard procedure for such an occurrence where a number of teams are occupying championship accommodation.

CARTA DE LA IAAF A LOS JEFES DE EXPEDICIÓN

6 August 2017

Dear Team Leaders and Team Doctors

As you may have heard there have been some cases of acute gastro enteritis in some athletes and staff members in a small number of teams.

In order to ensure the safety of your team and others linked to the event, you are obliged to attend a meeting held by the LOC and IAAF either;

at the Guoman Tower Hotel at the Marathon Athlete Call Room at 17.30hrs or at the TIC in the Stadium at 18.45hrs.

To contain the situation and protect your athletes, we strongly request you comply with the following directions:

1. Report to the Guoman Tower Hotel Medical Room (430) as soon as possible any episode of diarrhoea and vomiting. This report should include the name, category of the person and the room number 2. The person must be isolated and hotel staff will assist in allocating another room. 3. Recommendations from Public Health England say the affected person must remain isolated for 48 hours after the last episode of vomiting or diarrhoea and therefore, the person will need to take their meals in their room.

The Hotel have applied Public Health England’s recommendations on enhanced cleaning procedures and will support all measures in relation to these matters.

Individuals must be vigilant on personal hygiene and apply the following:

1. Wash your hands thoroughly after going to the toilet, using soap, hot water and clean towels. 2. Wash your hands before having a meal or a drink.

Yours sincerely

LOC Head of Medical IAAF Medical Delegate
